Fabian drove for a minimum of two hours, by my estimate. If my guess was in the right ballpark, we’d be cutting it extremely close to dawn by the time we returned to Blood ‘til Dawn’s lair. The sun might even rise before we got there, and then where would that leave us? If Fabian burned to a crisp, that was perfectly alright with me. I knew some vampires had daywalking abilities but wasn’t sure how.

I kept silent as we rode, and Fabian didn’t try to make conversation, not that I expected it. If he wasn’t feeding from me or trying to make me feel worthless, I might as well not exist. At least that was nothing new. He’d never taken me out on his bike before, though. And certainly not on a long road trip away from his club’s territory.

After a long stretch of nothing but the road and flat terrain, I saw tall formations on the horizon. At first I thought they were mountains, but the shape wasn’t quite right. They were roughly shaped like columns, jutting straight up into the air with flat tops. I didn’t get a sense of how truly big those formations were until we got closer. They loomed over us like giants. I wondered if this was how ants felt when they came across Stonehenge.

Light flickered atop several of those massive stone columns, like candles in the darkness. Only with how big the surface area had to be, those were probably bonfires rather than candles.

More light brought my gaze down to in front of us where a large fire roared in a clearing at the base of one of the stone formations. Fabian pulled up next to the fire and stopped, bringing his kickstand down but keeping his engine running.

The fire burned in a stone circle roughly the size of a car. The fuel in the center stretched tall over my head. All the branches and wood piled up in a neat pyramid was probably the equivalent of an adult oak tree. The heat was almost stifling, and I could feel myself starting to sweat under my clothes.

“What are we doing here?” I asked after a few minutes of Fabian just sitting on his bike near the fire.

“Nothing you need to be concerned about,” he snapped. “Just running an errand like I told Thorne.”

“Is it okay if I stretch my legs?”

“Fine. Just stay close.”

Like I had anywhere to go. A memory of Sawyer hit my chest as I slid down from the bike. His home, his warmth and safety, felt so far away now.

I played with the flag still tied around my wrist as I walked a lap around the crackling fire. I should burn it, I thought. Just toss it in the fire. It was a morbid thought, one that came from a place of pain, even though my memories of him were good ones.

The fact was, thinking about him hurt, even though my return to Fabian wasn’t his fault. Throwing his symbol of protection into a fire felt like a retaliation for all the promises that never came true.
